Ponza was already known to the Romans, who used it not as a holiday retreat but as a place of exile for political opponents. The most illustrious exile was undoubtedly Agrippina, though some sources also record the exile of Nero. Alongside these two witnesses of the past, Pope Silverius — the island's patron saint — was also exiled here: his feast is celebrated on 20 June and brings together all the different communities that share the Ponza spirit.
There is ample evidence that the island was permanently inhabited from the first centuries BC. Twentieth-century excavations uncovered the remains of Roman villas, aqueducts and rainwater cisterns. The discovery of numerous hypogeal chambers points to a necropolis, also datable to the first centuries AD.
Since antiquity Ponza has been considered part of the Campanian archipelago: its name is thought to derive from its position in the open sea, the furthest land from the Campanian coast. Although Ponza is today a municipality in the province of Latina, its origins, dialect and traditions reveal its bond with Neapolitan culture.
